Online Guitar Tuner Microphone versus physical guitar tuner

Guitar Tuner Microphone

For those of you just starting out at learning guitar and are worried about tuning, tuning equipment, guitar tuning microphone etc, a good basic method to test is the online guitar tuning facility. There are a lot of tuners available online spread across hundreds of websites. Don’t get too hung up on which is the best as they all do more or less the same thing. For example, the E sound will be the exact same on all major guitar tuning websites. Also not, that using online guitar tuner microphones is really only recommended for beginners. As you become more advanced at guitar I recommend you buy a physical portable tuner.

Types of Guitar Tuner Microphone

There are only two types of online guitar tuners. The first tuner uses the strings sound as input. The monitor then in turn shows whether you need to tune high or low depending on reading. The special cable used to the hook the guitar to the computer is usually called a usb cable. Software developers are able to read this input and use algorithms to drive display
readings.

The other major type of online guitar tuner is a one that does not require any cable to connect it to the computer. The microphone in the computer picks up the sound and feed it to the application that performs the tuning recommendations. These guitar tuner microphones can sometimes be inaccurate due to the microphone picking up external noise. However, microphones have improved considerably so on newer computers this should not be much of an issue.

Guitar tuner microphones also have other features, like metronome which can be used to calibrate a reliable tempo. The strum option is available which consists of a continuous sound loop of all tuned guitar strings. The user just has to press a button on the screen and the loop starts on. He doesn’t even need to click on every individual strings to check his tuning. Some online guitar tuners also have an option where the user can choose a type of sound.

Some good offline guitar tuners

When you do become more advanced at guitar then here are some of the best physical tuners that come highly recommended.

The Korg GA1 Guitar and Bass tuner. This retails for approx only $12. This tuner is probably the most popular of all portable guitar tuners. Another strong option is IntelliIMT500 clip on tuner. This is my personal favourite. I like it because I find it easiest to use and can tune my guitar very quickly. It’s slightly more expensive than the Korg but in my opinion well worth it. Snark are another good make. I personally have not seen or tried this tuner but have read many good reviews about it.
